[미국박물관] 시카고 미술관 / 모네 전시 / Art Institute of Chicago / Monet and Chicago /
뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄, 보스톤 미술관과 함께 미국 3대 미술관으로 뽑히는 시카고 미술관( the Art Institute of Chicago) 에서 모네 전시를 2020년 9월 5일 부터 2021년 1월 18일까지 개최한다고 합니다. 요즘 이상하게 19세기 문화에 대한 자료를 많이 읽게 되는데, 저의 모교(School of the Art Institute of Chicago)의 재단인 시카고 미술관에서 모네 전시를 한다니 감회가 새롭네요. 또 요새 정원 garden에 대해 본격적으로 공부하기 시작했는데, 정원의 역사에서 '모네의 정원'은 '타샤의 정원' 만큼 유명한 사람이더군요. 그런데, 마침 시카고 미술관에서 모네 전을 한다고 하네요. 뭔가 세렌디피티 영화에 나오는 사인 같다는 쓸데없는 생각이 들긴 하지만, 그냥 관심가는 분야에 눈이 가는 것이겠죠.

시카고 미술관 Art Institute of Chicago 은 1886년에 시카고 디자인 학교(Chicago Academy of Design)로 교육과 전시를 함께 하였습니다. 1882년 지금의 이름인 시카고 미술관 Art Institute of Chicago로 바꾸고 유명 콜렉션을 가진 미국 3대 박물관으로 자리잡습니다. 고전유물, 미국 현대미술, 아시안 예술, 아프리카 예술 등 광범위한 작품들을 소장하기로 유명하지만, 19세기 인상파, 후기인상파의 유럽피언 페인팅, 조각, 그리고 장식예술(텍스타일)등의 작품을 소장하기로 유명합니다. 특히 조지 쇠라Georges Seura의 A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, 1884–1886과 세상에 3점만 있다는 빈센트 반 고흐 Vincent Van Gogh의 Bedroom in Arles 2번째 버전(첫 번째 버전은 네덜란드 반 고흐 미술관, 세 번째 버전은 파리 오르세 미술관에 있습니다.), 그리고 1887년에 그린 자화상Self-portrait,을 소장하고 있습니다. 박물관 강의실에서 수업이 있는 날은 일찍 가서 유럽피언 페인팅 방과 장식예술 방을 항상 들려 둘러보고 수업에 갔던 기억이 납니다.

시카고 미술관에는 쇠라, 반 고흐의 작품 이외에 마네 Édouard Manet, 모네Claude Monet,, 르느와르Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 세잔느Paul Cézanne', 로트렉Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 드가 Edgar Degas, 고갱 Paul Gauguin,마티스 Henri Matisse' 등 19세기 인상파, 신인상파, 후기인상파의 유명 작품들을 소장하고 있습니다. 또한 피카소 Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncuși , 마그리트 René Magritte , 칸딘스키 Wassily Kandinsky, 말레비치 Kazimir Malevich,등의 유명 작품을 감상할 수 있습니다. 교과서에 나오는 거의 모든 작품들을 시대별로 소장하고 전시하고 있다고 보면 될 것 같습니다. 시카고 미술관이 만들어 질 당시는 미국은 상대적으로 역사가 깊은 유럽 예술에 비교해 막 성장하는 어린이였습니다. 이때, 갑자기 성숙한 성인으로 성장하게 해 준것이, 바로 세계 전쟁 이후, 유럽 작가들의 미국 망명일 것입니다. 시카고가 건축으로 유명해 진 이유도 전세계의 실력 있는 건축가들, 특히 유럽 아방가르드 건축가들이 미국으로 들어오면서 입니다. 시카고는 시티 안에서 같은 디자인의 건축물에게 건축 허가를 주지 않을 정도로 건축이 발전하도록 도시 자체가 지지했다고 합니다. 그래서 유럽 건축가들은 신나게 새로운 아이디어의 건축물을 설계할 수 있었다는 것이죠. 이는 미국 건축가들이 성장할 수 있는 큰 교육의 계기가 되었고, 유럽의 노하우를 단 번에 받아 들일 기회였습니다. 시카고 미술관은 Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 등의 오리지널 설계도를 소장함으로 이런 역사적 사실을 교육하고 있습니다.

사실 특별전을 하지 않아도, 모네의 유명 작품은 이미 인상주의 상설전시에서 하고 있습니다. 시카고 미술관의 특별전은 장시간 정성 들여 기획하기로 유명합니다. 아래 링크에 들어 가면, 전시 작품과 모네에 대한 동영상 설명이 있습니다. 랜선으로라도 관람해 보시기 바랍니다. 시카고 미술관의 또 하나의 명물은 특별전 아트 샵인데요. 제가 처음 미술관에 갔을 때, 반 고흐 전을 해서 구경 할 것도 많고 기념품으로 사온 양산과 가방은 20년이지난 지금도 소장하고 있습니다. 랜선으로 전시 감상을 해야 하니, 참 아쉽습니다.
